Looking forward to Luke

Yesterday, we kicked off our study of Luke. We looked at Luke 1:1-4, and introduced the book and person of Luke. I hope you'll come back here to the Pastor's journal page to add comments and ask questions, as we seek to know Jesus more through the gospel of Luke.

Control Freak info

The whole month of October will be our "Control Freak" series.

The intro videos each week will be posted on this page.

If you'd like to do further research on this topic, I'd suggest Les Parrott's The Control Freak.

Thoroughly Enjoying Books

God is definitely using Francis Chan in this generation to give some much needed wake up calls. His two books, "Crazy Love", and "Forgotten God", have inspired me, and I would highly recommend them.

School's In

Hey, school's back in, and I've got two going now, with Sam entering Kindergarten. I was really struck by the fact that there is so much inter-connectedness (is that a word?) in our little community of White Oak.

Sam is going to school with kids that he's playing soccer with, and going to church with. This is something I read about in a book called Making Room For Life, where the author speaks of consolidating his circles.
His circles being the school friends circle, the baseball friends circle, the church friends circle, the neighborhood friends circle, etc..

Rather than having so many circles of people he barely has time to see, much less know in a true friend type of way, he has fewer circles that include the same group of people. This enables them to be able to "share life" together and develop deeper friendships.

It's an interesting concept, and an interesting book, with other great thoughts as well.

Book I'm reading

I'm checking out one called, "The 4:8 Principle", and already, the first 30 pages have got me thinking. This one would be worth your time.

Ready for '09

Are you ready? I've got to say that I am. The Christmas holidays were a great break (especially since we didn't have to visit an emergency room), but I'm ready to jump in to the new year.

I don't think most people are natural embracers of "change", but "change" can be good, and it can be what God uses to grow us. I guess overall I'm looking forward to growing this year, through all the "changes" God brings my way.

There could be quite a few of these changes, since I turn 40 this year. But this is a good thing. I think. No, No, it really is.

What a Thanksgiving!

I hope you had a good one. Our family's was an interesting one.
We had a good drive to Arkansas to my folks' house. Wednesday, we met my sister and her kids to do Santa pictures.
THEN THINGS WENT CRAZY!
On the way out of Santa pics, Kate twists while Ashley was holding her hand, and she dislocated her elbow. We didn't know this at the time, thinking she broke her arm. We take her to the emergency room near my parents house, while my sister takes the bigger kids to her place. The doctor says it's "nursemaid's elbow", a common thing among kids, and he grabs her hand, twists and flexes the arm up to pop it back in place. Easy fix.
So we go back to my sister's place, where her husband runs out to meet us to tell us that they rushed Sam to the emergency room at the hospital near their house with a gash in his head. His cousin had dropped a brick out of the treehouse on him. We get there to see him covered in blood, with a pretty big cut on the back-top part of his head. He's coherent, and walking around, so that relieves some fear. Then we get into the part of irrigating it out, and applying 11 staples to his head. That's the part where I started going fuzzy, and had to sit down.
After all that, Thanksgiving and Friday were uneventful days, not that we needed anything else. Then at 4am that Saturday morning, I woke up with a stomach virus that had me laying on the bathroom floor for 6 hours, until we could get the blessed drug finagrin to settle my stomach. About 24 hrs. later I was back to normal.
So we survived our 2008 Thanksgiving. It will be one we'll remember forever. Someone mentioned that I might want to think twice before preaching on "Job" again. No kidding!
Anyway, it's nice to be back in White Oak, safe and healthy. Looking forward to seeing you during the Christmas season.

Great book!

Our "Strong Man" sermon series was based on the concepts found in The Samson Syndrome. It's a good read that will make you think.
